The popularity of sport climbing and its ascension sheds another light on why so many people are attracted to living in the Roaring Fork Valley and Western Slope.
There are a variety of ways to get into the sport. If you want to start indoors, the Glenwood Springs Rec Center and the Carbondale Rec center both have indoor facilities and guidance available. The Monkey House in Carbondale has a fitness approach to climbing and a climbing class for beginners so its definitely a place or start or advance.
As far as youth go, the RE-2 school district has an amazing climbing club which provides transportation and gear as well as guidance and instruction for young people. Indoor climbing opportunities are facilitated. CRMS has a climbing wall in their gym and hosts competitions.
Rifle Mountain Park is an extremely popular outdoor climbing destination due to the variety of climbs available. Beginners as well as experienced climbers can find routes and challenges that suit them. The Rifle Climbers Coalition is dedicated to a positive relationship between climbers and the park, and are very helpful.
There’s a wonderful spot in the White River National Forest north of New Castle that is just right for mountain goats and climbers.
Up in Aspen, there’s a new climbing wall in Snowmass Village as part of the new Lost Forest called the Rugged Ascent for kids and adults. Snowmass Village Parks and Rec Center also has a climbing wall. Finally the new Limelight at Snowmass Base Village has a large climbing wall that is brand new.
Aspen has a Red Brick Recreation center with a climbing wall.
Grand Junction is home to the Silo which is a fun place for kids to explore, including a challenge course with a climbing wall. It also has a gym called Grand Valley Climbing. The outdoor opportunities to climb around Grand Junction are numerous. Check them out here.
